It’s a rematch 65 years in the making.
It was in 1957 when UNC and Kansas faced off in the national championship game, albeit in a drastically different format. Then, just 23 schools played at the tournament, as opposed to the zaftig field we have today.
It was a game to remember: The Tar Heels won their first championship in a triple-overtime win over the Jayhawks, and they had to defeat basketball icon Wilt Chamberlain to do it. Chamberlain would win the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player despite playing on the losing team.

Well, heading into their seventh overall meeting in the NCAA Tournament, the Jayhawks hold a 4-2 tournament series lead over the Tar Heels, despite North Carolina holding the biggest win. The last time the two teams met in the tourney was in 2013, with Kansas handing UNC a 70-58 beatdown.
Hopefully this year’s tournament matchup is more reminiscent of their ’50s throwdown than 2013.
