‘We’re back’: Downtown hotels prepare for Hoopfest weekend

SPOKANE, Wash. — The world’s largest 3-on-3 basketball tournament usually brings in around $47 million to the Inland Northwest, and the hospitality industry is looking forward to that boost.

Even though registration is down around 40 percent since the last Hoopfest, local hotels say they’re expecting large crowds. Some people have already checked in for the big weekend, and hotels are ready to greet even more guests.

“Now with Hoopfest, we’re just rolling into big events,” said Jessica Dringman, the Director of Marketing for Davenport Hotels. She says Bloomsday also drew crowds, and they saw Hoopfest weekend fill up a couple weeks ago. They’re pretty much sold out and are getting ready for the rush.

“We see families start to trickle in all week, so we already have some guests checking in as soon as today, and they make just a week out of it and love to visit Spokane for the whole week around Hoopfest,” she said.

All the Davenport restaurants and bars will also be open, even short on staff.

“We are definitely still hiring,” Dringman added. “We have over 100 open positions across all five of our hotels.”

Over at the downtown Best Western Plus, Meredith Rainville’s been housing people for Hoopfest for more than 20 years.

“It’s just going to be great to see their faces and have them back,” Rainville exclaimed.

She isn’t sold out just yet, but a lot of that has to do with travel preferences.

“People are waiting a little bit longer to make their reservations just to make sure the event is still happening and they’re healthy enough to attend that event, so that’s kind of something normal that we’ve seen the last couple years,” Rainville said.

Hotels are ready for Hoopfest’s hospitality boost and the kickoff to a busy summer of travel.

“It feels like we’re back,” Dringman concluded.
