The Movie Gets Release Date at Netflix

Ever since the final of Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles aired, fans have been begging for more content. While the creators announced a movie was in the works, word on the movie has been fairly slim. Looks like the wait is finally coming to an end! The official TMNT Twitter account has announced Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie is coming to Netflix on August 5, 2022.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is a stand-out franchise for how many distinct incarnations it’s had since its creation. What started as a humorously dark comic that parodied edgy comics of the 80s soon became a monolith of a children’s cartoon. The popularity of the cartoon sparked several movies as well as consistent cartoon reboots over the years, not to mention toys, videogames, and even more comics!

New Faces, Same Turtles!

If you’re not already a fan of the turtles, you might be wondering why and how a franchise can have so many reboots and consistently stay fresh. Well, the short answer is this, it’s a very versatile franchise! TMNT has throwbacks, tributes, and inspirations of all kinds! More of a comedy fan? The first cartoon series is for you! Found yourself enjoying the classic sci-fi tributes and want a version that leans more into that? Then you’ll love the 2012 Nickelodeon series! Want to see the turtles battle more mystical leaning bad guys? That’s where Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comes in!

Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles follows the famous turtle brothers as they keep the peace between the citizens of New York City and the mystical yokai spirits. The series also stands out for mixing up a bit of the usual formula. In this version, Raphael is the leader of the four rather than Leonardo, Splinter is less of a father figure and mentor and more of a grumpy dad, and the Shredder is (almost) nowhere to be seen until the very end!

While the show was well-received upon its initial premiere in 2018, enough to earn the series a renew for a second season, said second season was unexpectedly shortened to 13 episodes later on. This caused the series finale to feel a little rushed among fans, and laid out the groundwork for plot elements that would be grounded in mystery. But one of those mysteries is going to be expanded upon in the upcoming movie, and that is of the mysterious Krang! The official Facebook for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles gives a short synopsis of the film.

In Nickelodeon’s Rise of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie, the Ninja Turtles are faced with their greatest challenge yet when a mysterious stranger arrives from the future with a dire warning. Leo is forced to rise and lead his brothers, Raph, Donnie, and Mikey in a fight to save the world from a terrifying alien species… the Krang!

It looks like a lot of what was set up earlier in the show will be coming to a head in this movie! Leo will be taking his place as the leader of the turtles, the Krang will get to have their spotlight, and things are going to get crazy. If you’re a fan of the turtles and let this show slip under your radar, you’ll probably want to check out the show on Paramount+. There’s some incredible action animation in this show, and with a movie budget that action is probably coming in with extra power. Turtle fans will want to mark their calendars for August 5th, and get ready for an invasion!
