Memorial Day weekend madness | Entertainment

The summer season is always an important part of the year for TV and film due to the magnitude of releases that occur. The summer of 2022 is no exception, and I would consider the official start to the madness to be on Memorial Day weekend. Not only will May 27 give us a great time at the movie theater with “Top Gun: Maverick” and “The Bob’s Burgers Movie,” but Disney + and Netflix are also going to hit streaming with a bang following the release of “Obi- Wan Kenobi” and the newest season of “Stranger Things.”

“Top Gun: Maverick” is bound to be a blockbuster hit this summer which will bring in fans of new and old to see this sequel to the classic 1986 film, “Top Gun.” Taking place 30 years after the original film, “Top Gun: Maverick” will follow lead actor Tom Cruise as he returns to be the teacher for other pilots this time. Val Kilmer will also be returning as Iceman and due to the trailers, we have seen that Miles Teller will be playing the son of Maverick’s old partner, Goose, who was killed in the first film. Not much else is known about the film, but considering the previous film and Tom Cruise movies, a thrilling adrenaline trip should be expected.

“The Bob’s Burgers Movie” will appeal to a more niche audience but will nonetheless be a good time. Likely just going to be an hour and 42-minute-long episode of the TV show, it is officially listed as a comedy/musical so there could be some fun moments that come out of this movie. While it probably will not be for everyone, fans of the “Bob’s Burgers” show should have a blast with it, like how fans of “The Simpsons” got “The Simpsons Movie” in 2007.

In what is probably my most anticipated project of the summer, the first two episodes of “Obi-Wan Kenobi” will be released on Disney+ on May 27. Picking up a decade after the fallout of “Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith.” , we will see new and familiar faces while also investigating how one of the galaxy’s fiercest warriors has dealt with the trauma that comes with the destruction of the Jedi and the downfall of his best friend. In mini series form, like the Marvel Disney + shows, I am confident that a great, straightforward story will be told. With the “Rematch of the Century” being promised between Kenobi and Darth Vader, there is certainly a lot to look forward to in the “Obi-Wan Kenobi” series.

Finally, May 27 will gift us with Netflix’s release of season four, part one of “Stranger Things.” The beloved show has been on hiatus since July 4, 2019 but will be making its triumphant return. Season four will be split into two parts with each episode being over an hour long. Part two will premiere on July 1. Based off the trailer, all of the “Stranger Things” staples are prevalent in season four and in full effect. The 80’s music and aesthetic, drama, action, comedy, and horror elements will find their way into the show.

Whether it be your favorite hotheaded pilot, cartoon family, Jedi, or group of investigative friends, Memorial Day weekend is bound to bring something to the table for all kinds of movie and TV fans.
