Watch fine art created in open air April 20-24 during the 6th Annual Plein Air Festival, with artists painting across the Tidewater area.
The event brings together local, regional and nationally known artists to paint “en plein air,” or in the open air.
The festival once again supports the mission of Coastal VA Plein Air to bring to the community “fine and beautiful art that reflects the extraordinary coastal location along the Chesapeake Bay in Ocean View,” event organizers said in a news release.
In 2019, the Plein Air Festival helped fund the installation of “Chryshellis”, an 8-foot-tall, fire-glazed porcelain and tile mosaic, at Ocean View Beach Park. The piece by Nevada-based mosaic artist and concrete sculptor Eileen Gay was dedicated in October.
During the first few days and evenings of artists this year’s festival, will paint at various sites throughout the broader Tidewater community. They will paint seascapes, cityscapes, gardens, architecture, and favorite landmarks, among other subjects.
Two culminating events will take place April 24 at COVA Brewing Company at 9529 Shore Drive in Norfolk.
A ticketed event, the Coastal VA Art Collector Reception and Sale, will be at noon, with tickets $30 per person. Ticket holders will be able to browse and purchase artwork before the opening to the general public. Tickets may be purchased at www.coastalavapleinair.com.
The patron event will follow from 1-4 pm, with a public art show and sale. The event is free and open to the public.
Funds raised from the events are used to bring art to the community. Coastal VA Plein Air is a nonprofit, grass-roots organization comprised of private citizens who live in Norfolk.
In 2020, raised funds from the Plein Air Festival, combined with $26,000 grant from NorfolkARTS, commissioned and placed a public sculpture in the Ocean View Beach Park. Proceeds from this year’s events will help commission a second piece of public art for the Ocean View community.
Artists participating this year include Lynn Mehta, Gina Buzby, Doug Clarke, Karen Lee Crenshaw, Vlad Duchev, Joanne Geisel, David Heath, Catherine Hillis, Pearl Horng, Greg Johannesen Diane Leifheit, Elisabeth McGinn, John Meyers, Maria Reardon, Orit Reuben, Elizabeth Rhoades, Stacy Rogers and Jennifer Young.
