Chris Evans is Captain America. But Joe and Anthony Russo think he’d make a great…. Wolverine?
During an interview with ComicBook.com, the Avengers: Endgame directors were asked if, theoretically, the duo directed a multiverse MCU movie, who would they cast Chris Evans as? Joe Russo was quick to say Wolverine, and he revealed why he believes Evans is perfect for the iconic X-Men role.
“Evans has incredible range and great physicality, and he’s real good at body control,” said Joe Russo. “He’s an incredible actor. I don’t mean this in a bad way, but he’s nothing like Captain America. Steve Rogers is very controlled and quiet, understated. Chris is energetic and funny and charismatic, and he brings a lot of energy to set. I’d love to see him do something like Wolverine.”
Of course, live-action Wolverine has been played by Hugh Jackman since his appearance in the 2000 X-Men movie. But with the X-Men now a part of the MCU, we might well see Marvel looking for an all-new Wolverine. Especially since Jackman hung up his claws with Logan – the epic send-off he deserved.
Still, the thought of Chris Evans becoming Wolverine is definitely wishful thinking. After all, he’s already played two different Marvel roles – originally suiting up as Johnny Storm in the 2005 Fantastic Four movie, not to mention its sequel.
Plus, The Human Torch is a role Evans himself is even more keen to revisit. “God, wouldn’t that be great?” he told MTV News. “No one’s ever come to me about that. I mean, I don’t exactly look the same anymore. That was 15, almost 20 years ago. Oh my God, I’m old.”
“I really love that character,” he added. “But I think aren’t they doing something now with Fantastic Four? I guess all bets are off. Yeah. Look, I would love it. I would love it. That would actually be an easier sell to me than coming back as Cap. You know what I mean? Cap is so precious to me. And you know, I almost don’t want to disrupt what a beautiful experience that was. But Johnny Storm, I feel like he didn’t really get his day. That was before Marvel really found its footing. So I loved that role and, you know, who knows.”
I get the feeling Wolverine would be an even tougher sell.
