Arthur Angelo Gonos
August 3, 1933 – June 12, 2022
Fresno, California – Arthur Angelo Gonos, beloved husband, father and Papou passed away on June 12, 2022, he was 88 years old. He was born on August 3, 1933 in Fresno, CA to parents Angelo and Marie Spiropulos Gonos. Art married the ‘Love of his Life’ Christine Angelos from Los Angeles and they were together for over 66 years until she passed away in March of this year. They had 5 children, Debbie, Michael, Kathleen, Angelo and Demitri.
Art graduated from Fresno High School in 1951. He attended UC Berkeley and graduated in1955 with a BA in Political Science. At Cal, Art was Senior Track Manager. He earned his Master’s Degree from CSUF in Guidance and Counseling.
Art served in the United States Air Force. He trained as a navigator/bombardier and attained the rank of Captain.
He was an educator in Fresno Unified School District for 31 years as a teacher, counselor, and continuation school principal at Edison, Hoover, and Bullard High Schools.
He was a lifetime member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Fresno. He served in the church’s Sunday School as both a teacher and principal for 55 years.
Art was a docent at the Fresno Chaffee Zoo for over 25 years, primarily giving tours to elementary school students.
He grew flowers for fun and exhibition, primarily camellias and with his wife competed in camellia shows throughout California and the Southeastern part of the United States. He served as both president and show chairman of the Central California Camellia Society. He also served as president of the American Camellia Society which is headquartered in Georgia. Art also competed for over 50 years in the floriculture department of the Fresno District Fair in numerous cut flower classes with dahlias being his specialty.
The family would like to thank his caregivers Noimi, Michael, Cely and the staff at Golden Years II and Maisha from A-Plus In Home Care for taking such good care of our father.
Survivors include his children, Debbie (Sam) Martin, Michael Gonos, Kathleen Gonos, Angelo Gonos and Demitri (Sarah) Gonos. He was Papou to his grandchildren, Nicole (Kevin) Korb, Jennifer Martin, Demitri J. Gonos, Hannah Gonos, Tyler Gonos, Nathan Gonos and Hunter Anderson and great grandchildren, Dylan Korb and Ethan Korb.
Funeral service will be at Saint George Greek Orthodox Church at 2219 N. Orchard Street, Fresno, CA 93703 on Thursday, June 30, 2022. There will be a viewing at 9:30am with the funeral following at 10:30am. Burial will be at Belmont Memorial Park.
