4 Streaming Services You Can Use on Your Nintendo Switch

The Nintendo Switch is a great gaming console, but unlike the PS5 and Xbox Series X, it doesn’t have a huge selection of streaming apps.

In this article, we show you which streaming services you can use on your Nintendo Switch, all of which are available for download from the eShop.

Nintendo Switch Hulu App

The Hulu app is available for free, although you’ll need a subscription to use the Disney-owned service that lets you watch thousands of movies and TV shows. You can add live TV and premium networks like HBO and Starz for an additional cost.

The Hulu app for Nintendo Switch is only available in the US – which makes sense, as Hulu doesn’t serve any other regions. Hulu’s cheapest plan costs $5.99 per month, and is ad-supported.

Youtube Nintendo Switch

YouTube is available on Nintendo Switch and is completely free. If you’ve ever used YouTube on another console or smart TV, you’ll be familiar with the app.

You can search for videos, browse your library, and interact with the community just as you would when browsing YouTube on your desktop. Unfortunately, one of the main things you can’t do is upload the video, either through the YouTube app or Nintendo’s video sharing function.

Currently, Funimation is the only major animation streaming service available for the Nintendo Switch. You can download Funimation from the eShop in the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, Mexico, Brazil and other countries.

pokemon tv

Pokémon is one of the most popular gaming franchises that you can play on Nintendo consoles, so it makes sense that the series would have its own streaming service on the Switch.

Pokémon TV offers a free way to watch cartoon series. While not every episode is available, there are plenty of them, ranging from the original series to the modern series. The app also plays host to special animation shows and highlights from the Pokémon tournaments.

There is also a special section for the little ones, featuring long singing songs and children’s songs.

How to download streaming apps on Nintendo Switch

To download any of these apps on your Nintendo Switch, go to the console’s home screen and open the Nintendo eShop ( red shopping bag icon).

If you do not have an internet connection and/or a Nintendo account, you will be guided through the setup process. Both are mandatory.

Once you are in, select Search From the right navigation bar. Select the application and then choose Free Download. This will take you to a screen called Confirm items to purchasebut don’t worry because that’s just the generic name of this checkout page.

Journalism Free Download Once again, the app will be downloaded to your Nintendo Switch and will be available from the Home screen when finished.

Can you get Netflix on the Nintendo Switch?

No, at the time of writing, you cannot get Netflix on the Nintendo Switch. In fact, you can’t get many popular streaming services on Switch, since the console also misses the likes of Disney+, HBO Max, and Amazon Prime Video.

In a 2017 interview with The Washington Post, then-President of Nintendo of America Reggie Fels Aim said that Nintendo built the Switch to be essentially a “world-class gaming device.” He also stated that Nintendo has been talking to “companies like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon” and that support for these streaming apps “will come at the right time.”

Fast forward five years and only one of those services Fils-Aime mentioned is available on the Nintendo Switch.

However, you can access these apps by installing Android on your Nintendo Switch. This will void your warranty and is only recommended for advanced users.

Play Great Nintendo Switch games

As you can see, the Nintendo Switch doesn’t have many streaming apps. Let’s hope more will be available soon; If there is a specific person you want, it is helpful to send an email to that broadcasting company to register your interest.

Until then, don’t sleep on the plethora of great games you can play on the Switch. After all, as Fils-Aime said, the Switch is essentially a gaming device.
